A large 1880’s built Victorian style home in Darling Point, known as ‘Cleveland’ has come to market with Ray White Double Bay selling agents Evan Williams and Michael Finger for circa $10million.

The seven bedroom property, sitting on a 1,045sqm parcel of land, and framed by Harbour Bridge views, is owned by the retired Dr. Barker and has been in his family for almost 20 years.

Built by the same builder who constructed the grand Swifts property, located further down the road, the three-level property even used to have a servants quarters downstairs.

Dr. Barker said that his time living at 56 Darling Point Road is the most enjoyable he has had.

“My daughter had her wedding here, there have been many special parties held here, and many special moments. This home is ideal for entertaining,” he said.

Dr. Barker purchased the property in 1996 for $2.35million, with a few additional inclusions at the time, namely the large chandelier on entry into the mansion. The sale was made after the property was passed in at auction, and Dr. Barker remembers fondly how he almost missed it entirely.

“On the day of the auction, I was coming down to Sydney from Newcastle, we almost didn’t make it to the auction and turned up halfway through. We didn’t end up bidding that day, and purchased the property for the reserve price afterwards,” he said.

According to selling agent Evan Williams, the most iconic aspect of the home is that it comes with a small part of the Swifts history attached.

“From a real estate point-of-view, the most captivating feature of this property is that it was constructed by the Tooth family, who are famous for building the iconic Swifts mansion further down the road,” he said.

Dr Barker said he hopes the next owners of the property will enjoy it as much as he and his family have over the years, “I think a large family would very much benefit from what this home has to offer,” he said.
