Homebuyers may be interested to find out about the latest housing affordability report concerning Tasmania.

Housing minister Brendan O'Connor has endorsed the report entitled Tasmania's Affordable Housing Construction Program Report, released on Friday (September 7) by the Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services.

It shows that Tasmania has exceeded its delivery target of 1,400 new affordable homes for lower income households.

Mr O'Connor said: "All Australians deserve a safe and secure home.

"The Gillard government has made affordable housing a national priority and I'm proud to see the progress we have made not just in Tasmania but around Australia."

In total, the government has contributed more than $159 million to new housing projects in Tasmania, Mr O'Connor said.

He noted there is always more that could be done to help.

"We know that our initiatives are making a real difference to people who are struggling to find an affordable place to call home," he concluded.

The report shows how investment in housing may be helping homebuyers in the region and this may be the incentive some first-home buyers require to make the move onto the property ladder.
