  • 100 years of Brisbane real estate: where it began

Since 1924, Ray White has been at the forefront of real estate in the heart of Brisbane, after moving from Crows Nest to his first city business on Brisbane’s Queen Street. With a need for a bigger challenge, Ray relocated both his family and business to Brisbane to further test and push the potential of the family business, and expand into a market which would quickly become home.

Location was key and the first Brisbane office was opened in the Colonial Mutual building; a building that was requisitioned by General Douglas Macarthur as his headquarters during World War II. As with many businesses, the difficult years of the Great Depression and World War II had a major impact and presented Ray with both personal and business upheaval, with three of his children having signed up for military service.

However, post war there was an opportunity to rebuild and grow. Ray’s first advertisement was published in the Brisbane Daily Mail, alongside his announcement that he was “open for business”. The first listings advertised included a “just listed country jewellers’ business” and “an old - established store in a prosperous district” which started the revitalisation of the group and was a key step in establishing Ray White in Brisbane real estate for what has now been 100 years.
