Over the last nine years, Tallagandra Hill winery and cellar door at 1692 Murrumbateman Road Gundaroo has become well known not just for its award winning wine but as a contemporary venue perfect for weddings, functions and live music events.
The business has evolved to become a key player within Australia's live music industry.
Rock icon Jimmy Barnes has played there four times, and so has celebrity artists such Kate Ceberano, Troy Cassar-Daley, The Waifs and Darryl Braithwaite.
With newly built onsite boutique vineyard cottage accommodation located within the winery, Tallagandra Hill offers a unique rural escape, surrounded by heritage structures and also beautiful local modern art.
Ray White Canberra marketing agent Chris Dixon said he expects a lot of interest from all over the country for this unique business with multiple income streams.
“When the current owners first acquired Tallagandra Hill Winery and cellar door in 2016 it was exactly as the name suggests - an operation well regarded for its wines in the strategic cool climate wine corridor. Today, however, it is so much more.”
He said there were income streams including wine growing and making; product and service sale plus tourism with its unique accommodation and experiences and extraordinary events - music, weddings, corporate, private.
David Faulks and his wife Mary have built a bustling events centre with private events booked two years in advance.
“The business has grown seven fold in recent years, it is resilient to the weather and highly sustainable,” Mr Faulks said.
“We were living in inner Sydney when we first saw the vineyard, and we just absolutely fell in love with it. We saw a huge amount of potential that we saw at the time. And we just thought, why not?
“The vineyard is extremely healthy at the moment, we've been working hard over many years with an organic nutrient program to make the vines happy and healthy and productive, and we're producing fruit this year that is really outstanding, which is exciting for everyone in the district.
“We've built the business around multiple revenue streams. We've become known for our music events plus we put in accommodation on site, so there are multiple different customer experiences, which, at the same time gives us a chance to build resilience into the business.”
Despite their love for the winery, the pair plan to sell to spend more time with family, including a new guest house in Ireland, while remaining active in the Canberra region.
“After nine years, it's time to pass the baton on. We've taken things to a level that we're very proud of, and that we think is highly sustainable into the future, but we know that other people could come in now and do things that we've only just started to do. The business could double what it is at the moment,” Mr Faulks said.
Tallagandra Hill is 30 minutes out from Canberra. The vineyard has 4.8ha under vine. The first plantings of shiraz were in 1998, and varieties include Shiraz, Tempranillo, Cabernet, Viognier and Vermentino. The cellar door seats 50 plus people with an outdoor courtyard for 80 people with a commercial kitchen, and the function centre can host large events too. There’s three bespoke self-contained one bedroom cottages set among the vineyards, with valley views perfect for soaking in the sunsets with a perfect Tallagandra Hill drop.
