An upgrade to the Peak Downs Highway may be of interest to investors searching for rental properties in the Queensland area.

The development of the main road connecting the resource-rich Bowen Basin and the Queensland coast has the potential to further develop mining in the state and provide ample job opportunities for employment seekers.

Creating better access to key resources - such as mining projects - may also increase the demand for rental properties near the venture.

Federal minister for infrastructure and transport Anthony Albanese said in a statement on Thursday (August 23) that he has endorsed the release of $13.5 million to complete the design and planning work for the highway project.

This project will also fulfil one of the government's election promises to improve the safety of the road by straightening and flattening the highway over the Eton Range, Mr Albanese added.

He said: "This project is a good example of Federal Labor reinvesting a proportion of the wealth created by our natural resources back into building the road, railway, port and social infrastructure which the mining industry and local regional communities rely upon."
