If you live in a heritage home in Sydney, it is important to approach renovations without compromising their status as an important record of life in the harbour city.

But it is also a reality that older properties do need upkeep from time to time, and if you own heritage real estate in Sydney, a new series of workshops put on by Sydney City Council could be the perfect opportunity for you to learn how to approach restoration and maintenance in the right way.

As part of the National Trust Heritage Festival, a workshop titled Heritage 101 will be hosted at Customs House on May 16.

This workshop, which will be introduced by City of Sydney lord mayor Clover Moore and hosted by ABCTV's Who's Been Sleeping In My House presenter Adam Ford, will feature detailed tips on how to ensure heritage restorations proceed smoothly and review the processes Sydney real estate owners need to follow before they go ahead with their project.

Architects and heritage building specialists Gary Waller, Otto Cserhalmi and Peter Phillips will also be onhand to offer important insights.

"It's important we maintain heritage buildings for the generations to come, by using best practice techniques for restoration or renovation work in heritage conservation zones," said Ms Moore, adding that historic buildings play an important role in shaping Sydney's character.
