The City of Perth has won a coveted Western Australian sustainability award for its continuous efforts to increase awareness about maintaining the city's heritage buildings.

Lord mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the award acknowledges the council's efforts to help to preserve the city's history.

"Heritage and culture help to define a city and the council places a very high priority on ensuring they can be sustained and respected as the city grows and develops," Ms Scaffidi said.

Keep Australia Beautiful organises the award ceremony in WA to recognise councils' commitments to making valuable contributions to their cities environmental sustainability.

Environmentally-minded people may be interested to see how sustainable practices are being incorporated into policies around Australia.

In Victoria, Boroondara won Sustainable City of the Year and Frankston Foreshore won the Clean Beach of the Year award.

Penrith in New South Wales won the sustainable city award for their plan to make Penrith a more environmentally conscious place. Keep Australia Beautiful is a non for profit environmentally focused organisation.
