If you think you may wish to sell real estate in Sydney or elsewhere in New South Wales, you may wish to take note of some of the ideas suggested by Ava Shirley.

The current Master's of Architecture student has spent three years at leading Sydney firm HASSELL and recently shared her thoughts on appealing improvements with the Real Estate Institute of New South Wales.

Bright, open spaces

Nothing makes a living space more appealing than plenty of natural light. Ms Shirley suggests that large windows that face the north and east side of the property are the best, and when possible, a skylight can add some much-needed brightness.

But she also noted some quicker fixes that don't require huge reconstruction - simply replacing heavy, solid interior doors with frosted glass ones can open up a space and make it appear lighter.

Consider the property

Comfort is paramount in any home, so Ms Shirley advises that residents first get a feel for the home for at least a few months before they decide what they would like to change.

Popular improvements help to regulate the temperature of the home - for example, better insulation can keep residents warm in the winter, cool in the summer and can be a helpful unique selling point if you do decide to put the property on the market.
