A circa 1873 Templestowe homestead once home to home to pioneering orchardist of the area John Read is on the market with price expectations of more than $2.5m.

Named ‘Morialta’ the property sits on 7155m² of land, is currently owned by cardiologist Professor Murray Esler and psychiatrist Dr Rosemary Schwarz and is arguably the most historic home of Templestowe.

“John Read built the property on the land his father, James Read, bought in 1861. James Read is believed to have planted the first orchard in the area,” said marketing agent, Maurie Torelli of Ray White Manningham

The renovated Victorian property at 81-83 Serpells Road, Templestowe, is heritage-protected which prevents the double-fronted facade from being changed and the block can’t be subdivided.

“The heritage overlay doesn’t prevent other areas of the home to be improved upon,” Maurie explains.

“The property is beautiful and has been meticulously cared for, however there’s still future potential for additional renovations.”

The six bedroom home features vast gardens with private stables, return verandas, north-facing alfresco patios and in-ground swimming pool.

Inside, Maurie says the design merges classical styles with modern finesse.

“Many of the period features have been retained and the floorplan is versatile. standout features of the home include interconnecting formal sitting and dining rooms with marble fireplace, a den and fireside billiards room with wet-bar and bench bay windows,” he said.

Offering privacy and space, 81-83 Serpells Road, Templestowe is the perfect family home and goes to auction on Saturday, 13 December.
