An historical art deco apartment block in Fortitude Valley is going to auction on 11 December.

Designed by renowned architect, Hennessy Hennessy & Co., the block at 9 McLachlan Street was built in 1934 for Thomas Charles Beirne, an early politician and businessman in Brisbane.

“The block consists of eight self contained units that were originally designed for young women working in his Fortitude Valley department store,” said marketing agent, Damon Warat of Ray White Ascot.

Named Bulolo Flats, the building is a two story art deco block with four one bedroom units per floor and a shared rooftop entertaining area with views of the city.

“This building was built to the highest standards and has withstood the test of time. It’s in excellent condition as it stands, but there is the potential of future development.

“The gross annual income is approximately $137,280,” Damon explains.

Recognised as a place of state cultural heritage significance, Damon says Bulolo Flats represents the changing social attitudes of the time.

“These flats were constructed specifically to house working women in the 1930s and are symbolic of the recognition of the community that many young and unmarried women could support themselves financially.

“Bulolo Flats were also built in an era when Brisbane was experiencing a period of chronic housing shortage. Thomas Beirne was a prominent businessman and politician of the time and earned the respect of the community for the construction of the units for his female employees.

The block of flats at 9 McLachlan Street, Fortitude Valley go to auction on 11 December with instructions to sell.

“Our instructions are to orchestrate a sale at auction and we have every confidence that we’ll be able to do that,” Damon said.
