When it comes to choosing the perfect location for your new home or rental property, proximity to public transport is an important consideration.

After all, we spend a significant portion of our lives at work, and there's nothing more frustrating than a cumbersome commute.

This is why news of improved fares and efficiencies in south-east Queensland is likely to be warmly welcomed by locals.

From each week from Monday, June 25 onwards, anyone who holds a go card will be eligible for free travel after they take nine journeys within a seven-day period.

This, according to Queensland premier Campbell Newman, means the Friday evening commute, as well as all weekend public transport use, will be free for those who use the service five days a week for work.

The news is especially good if you live in - or are planning to buy a home in - Palmwoods or Varsity Lakes, as the new initiative could translate into an annual saving of $642.

Meanwhile, those who own or rent property in Mitchelton or Oxley could end the year with an additional $220 in their pocket.

The new initiative benefits all go pass holders who use south-east Queensland's ferries, trains and buses regularly.
