A landmark heritage-listed residence in Ballarat known as the Bishop’s Palace is for sale with a price guide between $3.25m and $3.65m.

The grand residence was built circa 1876 as the home of the first Catholic Bishop of Ballarat, Michael O’Connor.

“This is arguably the most historic property in the area. When constructed, the Palace served a dual purpose: to be the home of the Bishop and diocese but also serve as the diocesan administrative headquarters,” Phillip Lee of Ray White Ballarat said.

The six bedroom palace at 1444 Sturt Street Lake Wendouree sits on more than three acres of land and features solid bluestone walls and mahogany balustrades

“All six bedrooms have private bathrooms and there’s a separate maids quarters that’s been converted to a home gym. There’s a grand formal dining room, reception hall, formal lounge and library.

“Outside features botanic-like gardens, spa pavillion, barbeque area, rotunda and cubby house,” Phillip explains.

Located in the centre of Ballarat, the property has views sweeping across the town to Lake Wendouree.

“This is an opportunity to secure a slice of Victoria’s history in one of the most enviable locations in Ballarat,” Phillip said.

Addendum:

The property was first listed with PRD Nationwide with a price tag of $6.5m and failed to sell. Ray White Ballarat have listed the property in conjunction with PRD and are marketing the property for sale via private treaty after the home passed in at auction.
