Eileen Bond's iconic Double Bay apartment sells for $20 million
The art deco harbourside gem at 3/9 Gladswood Gardens, Double Bay has sold prior to auction after just 25 days on the market, drawing extraordinary buyer demand.
Ray White Double Bay has announced the sale of the penthouse at 3/9 Gladswood Gardens, Double Bay, the beloved Sydney apartment of the late Australian socialite Eileen Bond, for $20,000,000.
The four-bedroom masterpiece sold prior to auction, in a result that underscores the enduring appeal of Sydney's most prestigious blue chip real estate.
The sale was negotiated by Ray White Double Bay principal Elliott Placks and sales agent Thomas Popple. The buyer, represented by Simon Cohen, has elected to remain confidential.
"The reaction from the marketplace was truly amazing. We saw strong engagement from a wide pool of serious buyers, with particularly compelling interest from downsizers and investors seeking a super blue-chip asset,” said Elliott Placks and Thomas Popple of Ray White Double Bay.
"We held 62 inspections and fielded 232 enquiries over three weeks which speaks to the extraordinary appetite for a property of this calibre. We also achieved 64 per cent more views on realestate.com.au than comparable properties across the entire campaign, a testament to the global recognition this home commands.”
Elliott Placks said this was a once-in-a-generation opportunity and the market responded accordingly.
Positioned in the heart of Double Bay's most sought-after address, 3/9 Gladswood Gardens is a magnificent dual-level penthouse spanning 492sqm within a grand art deco building. The property commands full, sweeping views of Double Bay and had not changed hands in 40 years, having been owned by Eileen Bond since June 1986.
Known affectionately as "Red," Eileen Bond, first wife of business magnate Alan Bond and a prominent figure in Australian social history, cherished the property as her Sydney retreat, spending up to three months at a time there each year.
The property was sold by her children, including daughter Jody Fewster, herself a top prestige agent in Perth’s western suburbs.
Ray White Cottesloe | Mosman Park principal Jody Fewster said she couldn't recommend Elliott Placks and Thomas Popple highly enough.
“Working with Elliott and Thomas was an exceptional experience from start to finish. Both agents demonstrated a level of professionalism and expertise that impressed our entire family, their handling of the sale was seamless, and their communication throughout was clear, thoughtful, and always considerate of our needs.
“This sale is a real testament to the power of the Ray White network, the group collaboration is something far greater than the sum of its parts. Our family felt that every step of the way.
“I sincerely hope I have the opportunity to work with them both again in the future."
The campaign attracted strong interest from high-net-worth downsizers and investors, with the property's rare combination of scale, heritage, and harbourside position proving a compelling proposition for buyers seeking a definitive blue-chip Sydney asset.
