Sydney apartment dwellers encouraged to get gardening
A green space is a great place to relax - but if you're an apartment-dwelling Sydneysider, you might find that a garden is hard to come by.
A green space is a great place to relax - but if you're an apartment-dwelling Sydneysider, you might find that a garden is hard to come by.
However, a new City of Sydney initiative aims to change this perception and prove that green spaces can crop up in the most unlikely of places.
A simple home-grown garden can take many forms, according to Sydney lord mayor Clover Moore, who noted that "remarkable results" can be achieved in old buckets on apartment balconies, or even kitchen window boxes.
She encourages Sydney residents living in properties of all shapes and sizes to attend this weekend's urban gardening forum, which is scheduled to take place at Customs House on June 9.
In addition to creating desirable green space and boosting a property's overall liveability, a local vegetable garden can also save considerable food miles - in other words, the distance that fresh produce needs to travel before it is consumed.
Sustainable living and urban gardening experts - including Surry Hills-based architect Sam Crawford - will be onhand in the harbour city to provide guidance and support to help residents flex their green thumbs.
