Ask any St. George local about heritage listed ‘Kintail’ and they will tell you it is the most iconic property in the area. It is now on the market with Ray White Oatley, for the first time in almost 34 years.
Built in late 1888, and steeped in history, the 19th century Victorian mansion sits on over 1500sqm, and was originally built and owned by Myles McRae, a prosperous businessman and the then mayor of Kogarah.
McRae's family subdivided the land surrounding the mansion in the early 1900s and subsequently sold off those blocks at auctions, thus creating the surrounding ‘McRaes Estate’.
The fully restored and preserved property has been home to the King family for almost 34 years, and was previously a boarding house for up to 13 persons when they purchased the property in 1982.
Julie King, now retired, said that she will miss the area greatly but it is now time to downsize.
“It is a very peaceful and quiet area and it’s been a wonderful home to raise four children who attended schools in the city. The public transport has always been great, with the train station two minutes down the street from Kintail and good shopping centres nearby. Although the area has changed demographically, it has always been a very safe place to live,” she said.
Selling agent Stefan Bujak said the home has changed hands very few times since 1888, "‘Kintail’ is considered the most iconic home in the area and is a magnificent, rare existing example of 19th Century Victorian mansions built by prosperous businessmen of the time,” he said. “There has been a significant amount of interest and it won’t take long before it is snapped up by its next owner.”
During her time at Kintail, Julie and her family lovingly restored the old mansion to its former glory, while also giving it a modern touch.
“We have restored the original cedar joinery, and we completed an extensive refurbishment about 20 years ago, which included building a large garage with billiard room and storage.
“When we first bought house, the surrounds were barren and we added landscaped gardens and a pool.” she said.
For Julie, her favourite feature of the home is the privacy, spaciousness of the rooms, and the 12 foot high ceilings. “The ceilings are lovely, each one with a different beautiful pressed metal pattern. It’s just a tasteful restful home.”
Some of the restorations the King family took on included exposing the original brickwork in the kitchen area, restoring all eight of the mansion’s fireplaces back to their former glory, and bringing privacy to the estate with a circular driveway and landscaping.
"With a marble tiled surrounding verandah and beautiful full-length windows with entry to the verandahs on both levels, I hope the next owners will enjoy the privacy and serenity accorded by Kintail", said Julie. “There are bay windows and alcoves and my favourite room is the study, which I think must have formerly been a library.”
Kintail will be available to view from February 2, contact Stefan Bujak for further information.
