QLD Real Estate: The Case for Flood-Friendly Housing

Queensland real estate owners should be rewarded by their insurers if they make home improvements that help to minimise their risk of flood damage, according to one expert.
Last weekend (April 14), Queensland's recovery and resilience minister David Crisafulli asserted that the discounts home insurers offer for property owners who install adequate safety measures - such as deadlocks on doors - should be extended to those who flood-proof their properties.
While occasional flooding is an unfortunate fact of life for some Queensland communities, he explained there are lots of ways for homeowners to minimise water damage - and therefore an expensive insurance claim.
These improvements could include replacing basement carpets with water-resistant tile, or raising the property above the minimum benchmark flood level.
"Cheaper rates for resilient buildings would be a win-win situation," said Crisafulli.
"The insurance companies could sell more policies, and more people would have peace of mind knowing they're covered for the times when even the best planning can't provide full protection against Mother Nature's wrath."
Smart home improvements may also make your property more valuable to those looking for real estate in Brisbane. Houses for sale with flood-friendly features may be particularly appealing to those who are worried about the risk of water damage.
