Their daughter, Irene Lynch, who was born in 1965, said her childhood was filled with warmth, community spirit, and the simple pleasures of family life.
“The kitchen was very small, but it was always where we gathered for meals,” Ms Lynch said.
“My mum cooked, my dad came home at 5pm, and the meal was set.
“Family, relatives - it was always around that table.
“This sense of family continued when Francis and Wally cared for their much-loved four granddaughters.”
Ms Lynch said when she lived at the home she remembered her neighbours were also very family-orientated and she along with her younger sister, Krystyna had a fulfilled life with all the neighbourhood children playing the backyard.
“That's what I remember most - the sense of community, the variety of nationalities all coming together,” she said.
Ms Lynch's father, who arrived in Australia with his parents and was initially placed at the Hahndorf barracks, went on to build the family home using local materials.
