Tenants in NSW rental properties will be able to access a DVD in 17 languages that outlines their rights and responsibilities.

The Department of Fair Trading in the Waratah State has released 'Renting a home: A tenant's guide to rights and responsibilities, after consulting with a number of interested parties.

Rod Stowe, Fair Trading commissioner, said that this is aimed at non-English speakers in a bid to protect both tenants and renters when it comes to rental properties.

He explained: "People from diverse backgrounds often suffer because of a lack of understanding of their tenancy rights due to language barriers and, in some cases, isolation from the mainstream community."

The DVD consists of ten short instructional videos including signing a lease and how to end a tenancy.

Languages in which the DVD is available include: Vietnamese, Tamil, Cantonese, Burmese Assyrian, Dari, Dinka, Farsi, Indonesian, Mandarin, Nepalese, Swahili, Korean, Kirundi, Arabic and Hazaragi.

YouTube and the New South Wales Department of Fair Trading website will showcase the video in a bid to promote its use through wider availability.

The department's YouTube channel has a litany of videos on renting, buying and other advice on dealing with real estate in New South Wales.
