Incredible, hand-made stone house “will last 1000 years”
Built entirely from locally mined basalt and surrounded by national park, this stunning Blue Mountains property would not look out of place in Game of Thrones.
Built entirely from locally mined basalt and surrounded by national park, this stunning Blue Mountains property would not look out of place in Game of Thrones.
“The workmanship that went into it, it’s exquisite,” the property’s vendor and 20 year resident, Michael Ivin said, describing walls three foot thick.
“As soon as I saw it, I bought it. I had never seen anything like it.”
“It took the builder eight years to build it by hand, and he is one of the best builders around. No one else would have done it. You’d have to be mad,” he laughed.
“The master bedroom is the biggest bedroom I have ever seen.”
Going to auction with a price guide of over $1 million, the four-bedroom, 2.5 bathroom home at 80-82 Hargraves Street, Blackheath is split over four levels and features soaring ceilings that are over seven metres high around the fireplace.
With the build completed in 1998, it is in excellent condition, according to Mr Ivin.
“It is a property that will last 1000 years, it will never fall down.”
Nestled on 4570 square metres at the end of a quiet cul de sac in Blackheath, Mr Ivin described the property as very peaceful.
“You can only hear the birds in the morning, that’s it and I love sitting in front of the open fire in winter.”
The property also features a two room studio that is ideal for guest accommodation or an artist’s retreat according to the selling agent, Katrina Allport of Ray White Blackheath.
“That was where the builder lived for the eight years he spent building the house,” Ms Allport said.
Other features include hand crafted stained glass windows, central heating, a double lockup garage that Mr Ivin uses as a billiards room, a double carport, established low maintenance gardens, a large woodshed and a chicken coup with running water.
“It really is a one-of-a kind home. It would cost a phenomenal amount to build today. It is truly unique.”
She described Blackheath as one of the best villages in the Blue Mountains.
“It has everything here. Restaurants, cafes, boutique shops, art galleries, World Heritage National Park, schools, swimming pool, everything. It’s a great community.
After living at the property for almost 20 years, Mr Ivin and his wife are retiring to the Gold Coast.
