First time buyers of residential real estate are now able to benefit from the Queensland government's $15,000 Great Start Grant.

State treasurer Tim Nicholls visited the Stockland's Bells Reach community in Caloundra as part of a marketing campaign to promote the grant, with an advertising operation and website being used to show how Queenslanders can enjoy the grant..

First home buyers can access the grant if they purchase new homes for sale or if they build one. That includes a house, townhouse, apartment or unit, with the $15,000 available to the buyers once the project is completed or the first draw-down of funds.

Mr Nicholls explained that as part of the state budget, the government doubled the grant in a bid to boost the construction sector and get more Queenslanders into homes.

"Knowing there is a $15,000 grant available will encourage more Queenslanders to buy new, rather than old.

"This is particularly important in regional resource communities where there is a real shortage of affordable housing. This is not a short-term sugar hit; the grant is here to stay."

The treasurer said that those interested should visit www.qld.gov.au/greatstartgrant to see if they are eligible for the grant.
