A $4.5 million accommodation scheme aimed at attracting general practitioners (GPs) to Port Hedland in Western Australia has been completed.

The project saw seven pieces of real estate delivered, with $1.5 million of funding coming from the Royalties for Regions program.

Regional development minister Brendon Grylls said the housing initiative was vital for bringing in more much-needed doctors to the Pilbara.

"These new houses will help to attract more doctors to Port Hedland, which will improve access to health services for everyone in the region," he said.

"Accommodation was identified as a major barrier for GPs looking to move to the Pilbara."

The project was delivered through a partnerships between the Town of Port Hedland and resources giant BHP Billiton, and is the first of its kind to be finished in the area.

Mr Grylls suggested similar schemes could help make the area more attractive to homebuyers, adding that premium health care will make Port Hedland "a place where people want to live and work".

It is just one of a number of ventures planned under the Royalties for Regions Pilbara Cities initiative, with the development of vibrant and engaging communities a primary aim of the state government.
