The Carlton public housing estate has reached another milestone as part of Social Inclusion week.
Minister for housing Wendy Lovell announced that the $260 million project has reached its second stage, which she opened in conjunction with the member for Northern Metropolitan Region, Craig Ondarchie.
One of the largest redevelopments of public housing in the state, she said, the Carlton project covers 7.5 hectares.
She commented: "Once it’s complete, the nine-stage project will have replaced 192 ageing public housing apartments with 246 new public and community housing units and approximately 750 new privately owned units."
The private sector has contributed $180 million to the real estate development which is expected to be completed by 2017.
This new second stage contains nearly 100 privately owned homes and 50 publicly owned properties across three buildings.
The government proudly announced that the properties have energy ratings of at least six stars.
Ms Lovell said that this new Carlton estate will benefit not just the tenants but the wider community surrounding the development.
The homes consist of one through to four bedrooms and were designed by Melbourne architects Jackson Clements Burrows.
Mr Ondarchie said this project was a great way to highlight the value of social inclusion and make every member of the community feel needed.
