ONE of Brisbane’s most significant homes, Cullen on Hamilton Hill is looking for its fourth owner in more than 80 years.

The landmark property at 84 Markwell St, Hamilton has a tremendous local history dating back to 1937 as one of the original Hamilton Hill residences.

Constructed by renowned engineer Edward Cullen and designed by prominent architect Mervyn Rylance, this established Georgian-style home made front page news at the time of its creation, reflecting its remarkable grandeur and distinction.

Ray White New Farm agent Christine Rudolph said the five bedroom estate had been impeccably maintained and sympathetically updated to preserve its standing as a blue-chip family property.

“Elevated and private with river views from its prestigious cul-de-sac position, this generously proportioned estate includes lush landscaped gardens enclosing a swimming pool and charming gazebo,” Ms Rudolph said.

“In the prized Ascot State School catchment and only 5kms from the CBD, this timeless family entertainer sits on 979sq m parcel of prestige land.”

Cullen is owned by Craig Emanuel, an executive director of New York-based investment bank Morgan Stanley, and his wife Samantha who is the founder of Milo and Macy Shoes, a successful ladies boutique in Ascot.

The family relocated from Sydney some five years ago and are only selling as they have found their next dream home in Hamilton.

“There are so many unique features we love about our home. It is not the typical ‘Queenslander’ made from timber on stilts, instead an architect designed timeless home, very unique to Brisbane,” Mr Emanuel said.

“The original architect Merv Rylance, was famous in the 1920s for designing a great number of the prominent homes in Toorak, Woollahra, Vaucluse and Bellevue Hill.

“It was one of the original and still standing homes built on Hamilton Hill for Sir Edward Cullen in 1936, who built Hamilton Port and the Port of Brisbane.”

Cullen was extended in 1995 by previous owner Richard Malouf of the largest chain of privately-owned pharmacies in Australia, who expanded the internal floor plan to more than 500sq m.

The Malouf family were the second owners in the home’s history, living there our more than 40 years.

Mr Emanuel said there was so much to love about living at Cullen from “the relaxing river views to the cooling breeze directly from the river”.

“We also love that it is an easy few minutes walk to the huge selection of restaurants on Racecourse Road and Hamilton Portside,” he said.

“The home is very private and secluded, another rare feature.”

The Emanuels underwent a significant rejuvenation project when they moved in.

“We repainted the home, new carpets, plantation shutters and blinds, landscaped and irrigated the whole quarter acre site. We have also fitted a working fireplace and replaced all the internal and external garden lighting. We have also redecorated the pool area and pool cabana too.”

The handsome 1930s design with polished jarrah floors, high ceilings, ornate cornices and a granite fireplace, goes to auction on May 28 at the Calile Hotel in New Farm.
