So it turns out that as a species, we humans have less information and detailed mapping of the surface of our ocean floors than we do of our Moon, Mars and Venus combined.

There’s an obvious similarity for many business owners in regards to how much they know about their business, compared to the service they offer to customers.

As leaders, do we really know what’s happening in our own backyards? Or are we too busy looking up at the stars?

We all love business strategy, growth and expansion but are we missing a fundamental area of improvement - an improvement in our existing operations?

Ask yourself, when was the last time you truly took a deep dive into your own business?

Whilst we all must have a vision and plan for the future, I would suggest that plan should also include looking deeply at current practice for areas of improvements and ways to create efficiencies with current operations. Innovation, streamlining process, cutting the excess, cross-training or retraining team members, adapting new technology and looking to maximise the value of our current and existing client base are all strategies that could greatly assist in improving results without the need for new business.

You may very well find that once you refine current operations, the ability for the business to grow without additional resource is improved - a win-win.

By all means, keep looking up at the stars, keep thinking of what’s next and keep that big audacious goal in mind, but don’t forget to continue to innovate and look at how you can improve your current operations along the way. Your business will be all the better for it.
