It was announced last week (June 7) that a new mining project has been approved for central Queensland near Moranbah.

The $1.7 billion Grosvenor Coal Mine will be operated by Anglo American and is planned to begin production in 2013.

The project is expected to provide employment opportunities during its construction phase and once in operation should also bring commercial prospects to the region.

Natural resources and mines minister Andrew Cripps said the mine is a significant development for Queensland residents and he is dedicated to the success of the project.

He also said that approval was contingent on Anglo American providing appropriate residential property accommodations for local workers.

"Residential infrastructure is a critical issue for Moranbah and I am pleased that Anglo American is working with other local coal companies to develop and ensure the availability of accommodation and key community facilities," Mr Cripps said.

"I am advised this company will offer a range of accommodation options to its workforce and build more than 50 new houses and townhouses in the Moranbah area."

Sound infrastructure was also stated as a top priority for the minister.
