Schools Auction Idol shines a light on young talent

A talent contest with a twist, Schools Auction Idol is a South Australian competition teaching school students the art of auctioneering.

The Schools Auction Idol final was held at the Art Gallery of South Australia last night. Six students from schools across Adelaide were in contention for the title. Each of the students were required to auction a make-believe property, answer questions from interested parties on the floor and sell to the highest bidder.

The youngest contestant was 15 year-old, Georgia Musolino. Georgia is a year 10 student at St Dominic’s Priory College in Adelaide. She was mentored by Ray White Adelaide principal and auctioneer, Brett Pilgrim.

With a real love for theatre, Georgia excelled in the challenge of Auctioning a property.

“For the last couple of months I’ve been working with Georgia and it has been incredible to see her progress. She’s got a great talent and her scripts took us on a humorous journey. Through her delivery, you could tell she has a love for drama,” Brett said.

“All the contestants should be proud of their achievement – auctioning is not an easy skill to master. Having the ability to stand in front of a crowd of strangers and perform is one thing. Delivering the right emphasis and energy levels at the right times, whilst keeping momentum throughout the auction is another skill altogether.”

Georgia and Brett worked together for two months to develop and hone her skills.

“This was the first year I became involved in Auction Idol and it’s been a great experience. Seeing the development of all the students throughout the competition is uplifting.

“It’s fantastic to think these students could be the future stars of the South Australian real estate industry. Auction Idol is a great initiative and I’m proud to be involved,” Brett said.

Auction Idol is facilitated through the Society of Auctioneers and Appraisers (SA). Experienced auctioneers mentor a group of high school students and teach the practical aspects of calling an auction, before putting these lessons to the test.

Students from all over Adelaide competed in heats where they auctioned their own house. The six students who made the final inspected a real house and called an auction for that particular property. Students are judged on their individual performance and auctioneering style.
